![]() Today, Northwestern’s music library is a hub for scholarly research into Cage as well as into experimental performance more broadly. Roberts, then Northwestern’s music librarian, because he was interested in “the problem of where to go to study manuscripts of contemporary music” and he wanted his own materials to be “safer and better kept.” At the time, few institutions took “new music” seriously, but Roberts had begun amassing one of the largest academic collections of it (it may even have been the only such collection in 1973). The archive also contains unprocessed ephemera, such as nine scrapbooks documenting Cage’s childhood and early tours. The other main section, the Correspondence Collection, consists of letters and other materials from throughout Cage’s life (not just those he received but also those he sent, thanks to the carbon-copy Note-o-Grams he wrote on), with the exception of letters related to acquiring the scores for Notations. One of the archive’s two main sections, the Notations Project Collection, includes scores that Cage collected for his book Notations, an ambitious anthology documenting how composers wrote music in the 60s, published 50 years ago by the avant-garde Something Else Press. Credit: Published by permission of the composer Its nontraditional score includes a razor blade taped to the page. ![]() Robert Moran created Sketch for a Tragic One-Act Opera specifically for John Cage’s Notations book project. Researchers can schedule appointments to view specific pieces from the collection in the library’s Special Collections Reading Room. Primarily a research destination for academics, the collection is kept in hundreds of folders and dozens of boxes in Deering Library on the Northwestern campus. The John Cage Collection isn’t housed in a tourist destination like a museum, and in fact it’s a couple miles outside Chicago. That said, not many Chicagoans know this archive exists-and if they do, they’ve probably heard of it only because of its Beatles lyric sheets, which have been a perennial magnet for local media coverage. But the collection at Northwestern is the largest single concentration of Cage materials anywhere in the world-it not only surveys modern musical composition during the 1960s but also humanizes a composer who continues to divide scholars with his challenges to the definition of music. Wesleyan University holds documents related to most of Cage’s books, the New York Public Library holds most of Cage’s music manuscripts, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, holds Cage’s materials related to mycology (the study of fungi). Like, ‘Oh, that’s it, that’s the concert in October of ’87.'” “It was really weird to encounter myself in this archival collection. “I was going through a poster collection, and I found a poster for the concert I performed in,” MacAyeal says. Since 2015 he’s served as curator of Northwestern University’s music library, and as part of the job he manages the university’s John Cage Collection, which the composer established with an initial gift in 1976 and added to repeatedly until his death in 1992. MacAyeal certainly hasn’t gotten away from Cage. “Whether you agree with him or not, you can’t not respond to him in one way or another.” “It’s hard to get away from Cage, as a composer or anybody that’s interested in new music since 1945,” he says. ![]() Thus MacAyeal’s fascination with Cage began. So he got MacAyeal involved to read excerpts from texts such as Walden and “Civil Disobedience,” chosen through chance operations. A composer as playful as he was profound, Cage had stipulated that the piece be performed by 12 “preferably American men who have become Canadian citizens,” but Brooks just needed willing musicians. In 1987, UIUC composition professor William Brooks, who’d participated in the HPSCHD premiere, staged a performance of Cage’s 1976 piece Lecture on the Weather, which incorporates words and drawings by Henry David Thoreau and was inspired in part by haiku form. ![]() He’d taught and researched at UIUC two decades before, from 1967 until ’69, spending most of his time cocreating a mammoth computer-music piece called HPSCHD that premiered in May 1969.Ĭage’s music didn’t leave the university when he did, of course. Arguably America’s most influential experimental composer, Cage is famous for his 1952 “silent piece” 4’33”, and in the 1950s and ’60s he’d pushed the envelope musically by composing works incorporating silence, indeterminacy, and electronics. Greg MacAyeal first encountered John Cage while studying music composition in the late 80s as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Sometimes you take 2/3 orders at a time to drop off at once and your out the building for a while and they are still charging 5.99 per order to the customer while giving you nothing. They should pay their workers better or give them an automatic $2.50 out of each delivery if they only making 8.50 on the road and charging 5.99 per order. The drivers get screwed cuz the customer is paying a ton of extra already for delivery and taxes. None of that goes to the driver and they do not pay for your car insurance when your delivering. They shouldn’t be collecting any $5.99 charge that’s just the owner being greedy. So they were paying us $8.50 when we were making deliveries and min wage when inside the store. The checks are very small because they only get paid min wage for the time they spend in the building waiting for an order which is usually a couple mins if that. I worked for dominos delivering and they don’t make full min wage when they are out on the road. And she's sending me a coupon for a free pizza even though I didn't ask for anything which was really nice. Anyway the lady was nice and thanked me for my feedback and for continuing to remain a carryout customer. But if you're paying separately for delivery to cover a higher wage than someone would make working retail then I don't see why tipping should be expected on top of that. So the cost of the service is not included in the cost of the food. Tipping in my area is considered mandatory because tipped workers typically make an absurdly low wage - $2.90/hour plus tips for a minimum of $7.50/hour in my area. Which makes sense, but if a worker is getting paid $12.75 per hour then that undercuts the concept of tipping. She explained that their delivery drivers in our area are subject to the New York fast food worker wage minimum - currently $12.75 AND they have to pay for the driver's car insurance when they're making deliveries which is the reason for the $5.99 delivery fee. UPDATE: So a manager at the franchise office called me - a really nice lady. I'll still stop by for pickup orders every now and then but it looks like delivery orders are coming from elsewhere from now on.Īnyone else have outrageous delivery fees from your local Domino's? Also any insight if anyone happens to work for Dominos would be greatly appreciated. Since I refuse to pay $5.99 delivery AND tip on top of that I just chose to order from somewhere else. But this puts customers like me who regularly do tip 20% on delivery orders in a bit of a bind. In fact I suspect that they raised the delivery fee to account for non-tipping customers. To me if you're going to have a delivery fee that high (and this isn't even in a big city!) that should include tip. And I've been fine with that until my local Domino's raised the delivery fee to $5.99 per order. So I get that the delivery fee doesn't go to the driver - it pays for the hot bags, extra delivery workers, car insurance etc and tipping is on top of that. ![]() ![]() The results are well above other Li-Ion battery projects, and Adden Energy is confident it can have commercial samples in the next three-to-five years. The battery uses a new technology that prevents dendrite formation in the lithium-metal anodes. Adden Energy is preparing a commercially deploy solid-state battery systems for electric. “We have achieved in the lab 5,000 to 10,000 charge cycles in a battery’s lifetime, compared with 2,000 to 3,000 charging cycles for even the best in class now, and we don’t see any fundamental limit to scaling up our battery technology. Solid state battery (courtesy Second Bay Studios Harvard SEAS). “We set out to commercialize this technology because we do see our technology as unique compared to other solid-state batteries,” said Xin Li, Associate Professor of Materials Science at Harvard and scientific advisor to Adden Energy. Still, Adden wants to scale the battery up to a palm-sized pouch cell and further to a full-scale EV battery. The coin-cell prototypes developed by Adden Energy for lab testing don’t look like much now. Based on lithium-metal technology, the battery can achieve charge rates as fast as three minutes with over 10,000 cycles in a lifetime. The cycling performance of the lithium metal anode paired with a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode showed an 82% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at a 20C rate (8.6 mA/cm2) and 81.3% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at a 1.5C rate (0.64 mA/cm2).The startup uses an exclusive technology license from Harvard’s Office of Technology Development to develop solid-state battery systems for use in future electric vehicles. Any cracks are filled by dynamically generated decompositions that are also constrained in the less stable layers. The multi-layer design has the structure of a less stable electrolyte sandwiched between more stable solid electrolytes, which prevents any lithium dendrite growth as the stable electrolyte layer decomposes. Instead, the researchers use a hierarchy of layers in the battery to achieve a high current density with no lithium dendrite penetration. That can lead to shorter battery life, but also to short-circuits that can cause fires. Tiny cracks in the ceramic layers can be generated during battery assembly or long-time cycling, and once these cracks form, lithium dendrite penetration is inevitable. “As a result, the device can sustain its high performance over a long lifetime.” We defeat the growth of dendrites before they can cause damage,” said Luhan Ye, researcher at Harvard, who is now chief technology officer of Adden Energy. ![]() “Typically, lithium metal anodes in other solid-state designs develop dendrites – twig-like growths that can gradually penetrate through the electrolyte to the cathode. The lithium metal solid-state cell has a specific power of 110.6 kW/kg and a specific energy of up to 631.1 Wh/kg. We have achieved 5000 to 10,000 charge cycles in the lab in a battery’s lifetime, compared with 2000 to 3000 charging cycles for even the best in class now, and we don’t see any fundamental limit to scaling up our battery technology. “We set out to commercialise this technology because we see it as unique compared to other solid-state batteries. “If you want to electrify vehicles, a solid-state battery is the way to go,” said Xin Li, a scientific advisor to Adden Energy and Associate Professor of Materials Science at the Harvard John A Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The design tackles the problem of lithium dendrites that grow with fast charging and reduce the lifetime. High energy long life rechargeable battery is considered as key enabling technology for deep de-carbonization. The technology, which has a lifetime of 10,000 cycles, has been licensed by Harvard University to Adden Energy to scale up to pouch and then prismatic cells for EV designs in the next 3 to 5 years. Researchers in the US have developed a solid-state lithium metal battery for use in future EVs that would fully charge in as little as 3 minutes (writes Nick Flaherty). ![]() The only thing you have to do is install it on your PC and drag the game file to the screen to start the installation and begin the game. It is based on the incorrect premise that Meta benefits unfairly from news content shared on our platforms, when the reverse is actually true,” Curran said. “For many months, we have been transparent about our concerns with the Online News Act. It says the move to block news is a response to the bill, which requires tech giants to enter into agreements that compensate Canadian news outlets for content shared or otherwise repurposed on their platforms. Meta said it is defining news content based on how it’s described in the Liberal government’s Online News Act, which became law earlier this summer. The federal government and some companies have already retaliated by ending advertising with Meta. “We expect more and more advertisers and their agencies will begin pulling advertising from the platform in response to this unilateral, undemocratic, and unreasonable move.” “Without access to real fact-based news created by real journalists, Facebook will become far less attractive to users and advertisers,” Deegan said in a statement.
